Nicholas was born about 1856 in Bovey Tracey Devon.1   Nicholas' father was Joseph STEER and his mother was Mary STEER. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Mary A, Ada C, Bessey and Florrie.  He was the oldest of the six children.
