Thomas was born about 1846 in Stockport, Cheshire.1   Thomas' father was Joseph STEARS and his mother was Jane STEARS. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Josiah, John, Joseph, Ann, Maria and Fanny.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
