John was born about 1851 in Stockport, Cheshire.1   John's father was Joseph STEARS and his mother was Jane STEARS. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Josiah, Joseph, Ann, Maria and Fanny.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
