Maria was born about 1858 in Stockport, Cheshire.1   Maria's father was Joseph STEARS and her mother was Jane STEARS. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Josiah, John, Joseph, Ann and Fanny.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
