Joseph was born about 1885 in Stratford, Essex.1   Joseph's father was Thomas STEARS and his mother was Eliza STEARS. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Arthur, Charle, Bertie, Amelia, Agnes and Alice.  He was the youngest of the eight children.
