James was born about 1887 in Spitalfields, London.1   James' father was Joseph STEAR and his mother was Ellen STEAR. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, Harry, Ellen, Emma and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
