Thomas was born about 1850 in Surrey.1   Thomas' father was Thomas MAXSOM and his mother was Sophia Steers.  His maternal grandfather was James STEERS. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Harry, Frank, Mary Ann and Lydia.  He was the oldest of the five children.
