Joseph was born in 1857 in Cumberworth, Yorkshire. Joseph's father was Joseph WHITAKER and his mother was Harriot.  His paternal grandmother was Elizabeth WHITAKER. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Elijah, James, John, Mary, Ellen and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
