Ellen was born in 1848 in Denby, Yorkshire. Ellen's father was Joseph WHITAKER and her mother was Harriot.  Her paternal grandmother was Elizabeth WHITAKER. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Elijah, James, John, Mary and Hannah.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
