He was also Samuel Brook's marriage witness in 1845. 1853 - 1922 Albert Stocks 69 69 Albert Stocks is my Great grandfather, born 4th Jan 1853 at Cocker Hill, Hartshead, Stalybridge, Ashton, Yorkshire (Vol 8d, p 457).

In 1861, the family had moved North and where living at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington.

In 1871 Albert (18, a Slater) and his father George (48, a Mason) were lodging with Joseph and Hannah Smith and their two children at Gilstead, Bingley.

Mr Stocks, who was born at Stalybridge, joined the West Riding Yeomanry at an early ago and came to Birkenhead about 40 years ago.  Taking up, his quarters with the Cheshire Engineers, he was soon advanced to the rank of Company Seargent Major and became one of the regiments crack shots. In 1891 he joined the King’s Liverpool’s, and in 1893 won the Queens Bronze and Silver medals.

Albert was in the last 100 of the Queen’s in 1890, 1892, 1893, 1895 and 1896 and won the third prize in 1892.

In 1871, Albert was lodging with father George and Smith family (Joseph and Martha Smith) at Bingley, Yorkshire.  Possibly a relation to his future wife Jane Smith, 2 years hence, but I cant find a link.

Married 29 March 1873, just 4 months before his father George died at Oxford Street, Bingley.

In 1880, Albert Stocks (28), a mason was acquitted of stealing a pick, of the value of 2s the property of William Foulds and others at Bingley in Feb 1880. He was however found guilty of stealing 4 planks of the value of 6s from Joseph Metcalf of Bingley. He got 3 months.

In 1881, George and Jane were married and living at Heather Bank, Bingley, Yorkshire.

In 1882 Albert, Jane and family moved from Bingley to Birkenmhead.  Annie's death was recorded there in 1882, and Walter's birth was the first to be registered in Birkenhead in 1886.

In 1891, living at 5 Cobden St., Birkenhead.

In 1901 ..?

In 1911, Albert and Jane (58 & 60) had been married 38 years and had a total of 7 children, three of whom had died (all 3 as infants).  Walter (24) and Minie (22) were still with parents at 6-bed house at 45 Thompson Street, Tranmere.

In 1921, Albert and Jane (born Bingley) were living in Birkenhead.

Saturday, 21 Jan 1922; a veteran marksman, Albert Stocks (70) passed away at 45 Thompson Street, Tranmere.
1829 - 1857 Ruth Stocks 28 28 Living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851 with parents Job and Lucy.

No matching record of death for Ruth Stocks in Huddersfield, so may have got married June-1853 or Mar-1856.  However, Emma is believed to be her daughter, so perhaps she died.
1832 - 1900 Martha Stocks 68 68 Living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851 with parents Job and Lucy

In 1841, aged 9, daughter of Job and Lucy.

In 1851, aged 19, daughter of Job and Lucy at Park Gate, Almondbury.

2 Aug 1851, Martha, daughter of Job married Thomas Brook a Cloth Dresser, son of Benjamin Brook at Almondbury.

Martha was confused with Martha Gledhill who married John Brooke the same year, and all were from Berry Brow.

In 1881 Thomas and Martha (both 49) were at School Lane, Almondbury with son James (22)

In 1891, Thomas and Martha (both 59) were at School Lane, Berry Brow.  Thomas was born in Honley.

In 1900, Martha Brooke of School Lane, Berry Brow died as was buried at Armitage Bridge.

1826 - 1883 Susannah Stocks 57 57 Susannah Stocks was baptised the second child of Job Stocks, clothier and Lucy, daughter of Daniel Crossland, a Clothier.

In 1841, Susanna was living in Almondbury, Huddersfield with parents Job and Lucy.  Her adult baptism records her as the second child.

24 May 1847 Susana Stocks (22), daughter of Job Stocks a Clothier, married William Horsfall (24), a mason, by Banns at Almondbury All Hallows.

In 1851, William and Susana Horsfall (26 & 24) were living at 36 Park Gate (Berry Brow) with their daughter Emma (9 months), next door to her parents, Job and Lucy and sisters Ruth and Martha (22 & 19) at No. 35.  William was a Stone Mason from Leeds.

In 1861, William and Susana (38 & 36) were living at “Back of the Hill” in the township of Park Gate with their daughter Emma (11).

In 1871, William and Susannah (49 & 44) were living at 238 Berry Brow, Armitage Bridge district with their daughter Emma (20).  Again it is shown that William was a Stone Mason from Leeds. William died in 1873, aged 51.

In 1881, Susannah (55, Wid, Head) was living with her son-in-law and daughter Enock and Emma Gledhill (27 & 30) at Deadmanstone Lane, Berry Brow.  They also had William Brook (55, boarder).

Susannah Horsfall died 25 April 1883 at Berry Brow aged 57.  Her daughter Emma Gledgill (wife of Enoch Gledhill) was the sole executor.  She was buried at St. Paul’s, Armitage Bridge on the 28th April.
1862 Joe Henry Brooke 1766 - 1807 George Stocks 41 41 As well as George and Mary Stocks, there was also a Charles and Sarah Stocks family in Berry Brow, perhaps a brother of George. 1830 John Brooke John Brook, Mason was the son of John Brook, a Cropper 1855 Ann Brook 1852 Bessy Brook 1857 Eliza Brook 1859 Sarah Hannah Brook 1824 - >1861 Rebecca Ann Robinson 37 37 Full name is "Rebecca Ann", confirmed by christening record and mothers name on son Albert's birth certificate.  She was born at Longwood, about 500m from Leymoor, and also close to Quarmby Cum Lingley.

In 1841, "Rebekah" was living in Ley Moor, Golcar with mother Hannah (45) and half-sister Betty (9).

In 1849, "Rebecca" married and on the 1851 census, but went by the name of "Ann" on the 1861 census, so although Rebecca was her first or official name, she probably went by the name of Ann.

Milnsbridge (spelled "Mills Bridge" on her wedding certificate) was the home of Rebecca Robinson before she was married to George Stocks in 1849.  Milnsbridge is just over the railway line from Longwood, where Rebecca was born (according to 1861 census).

Rebecca Robinson (b.1821, age 20) living in Dock Street with James and Mary Stuttard and family.  This is the only recorded Rebecca Robinson in Huddersfield in 1841, but her age appears a little old, and this is the wrong person.
Rebekah Robinson (b.1826) is a better match, living with sister Betty (b.1832) and mother Hannah (b.1796) in Golcar.

The 1851 census is a key record:  Rebecca was living at 30 Back Grosvenor St., Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Lancashire with George and Son Samuel (1 month old).

In 1856, when their son Walter was born, George and Rebecca were at 57 Grasscroft Street, Dukinfield.

Betweein 1857 and 1860, George and Rebecca moved from Dukinfield to Haslingden. In 1861 Joseph and Mary Ann Midword, another stone mason family, were living at 57 Greaacroft Street (district 27a).

Called Rebecca in 1841, 1849 and 1851, but then Ann in  1861.  She died before 1871 (when George was recorded as Widower).
1802 - 1872 Lucy Crosland 70 70 Lucy is my 3x great grandmother.  Born Berry Brow, Almondbury, Yorkshire in 18i02, she was living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851.

In 1841, Job and Lucy Stocks (both 35) were at Park Gate, Berry Brow, Almondbury with George (15), Susannah (15), Ruth (13) and Martha (9)

In 1851, Job & Lucy (47 & 48) are still at Park Gate with Ruth and Martha (22 & 19). Emma Stocks (grandaughter, 1 yr) is probably Ruth's daughter.  William, Susana and Emma Horsfall are neighbours.

In 1870, LIucy was ill and lost her left hand.  She died two years later.

In 1871, Lucy Stocks was living in Berry Brow, Almondbury  with husband Job (Lucie on census) and grandson George Brook.
1803 - 1879 Job Stocks 75 75 Job, a woollen weaver, is my 3x great-grandfather. Do not confuse with Job the Bookkeeper (b.1775), or Job the Cloth Dresser (b.1825)

In 1841, Job (a woollen Weaver) and Lucy (both 35) are living at Park Gate, Berry Brow, Almondbury with George (15), Susannah (15), Ruth (13) and Martha (9).

In 1851, Job & Lucy (47 & 48) are still at Park Gate with Ruth and Martha (22 & 19). Emma Stocks (grandaughter, 1 yr) is probably Ruth's daughter.  William, Susana and Emma Horsfall are neighbours.

In 1871, Living in Berry Brow, Almondbury with wife Lucy and grandson George Brook.

According to a letter to his nephew Joseph, Job cared for Benjamin and Sarah in their final years.

Job became infirm about 1875 and stopped earning.  He and daughter Susannah were supported by Alfred Healy, (assumed to be an agent of his nephew Joseph).
1851 - 1916 Samuel Stocks 65 65 Birth registered as Samule (not Samuel Edward), although he was named Samule Edward Stocks, son in law, on the 1871 census, and also on Susannah's baptism record

Born at Dukinfield, just South of Stalybridge, Lancashire (Cheshire on 1851 census).

April 1851, Samuel was 1 month old with his parents George (a Stone Mason) and Rebecca at 30 Back Grosvenor Street, Dukinfield.  Brother Albert was born 2 years later at Hartshead, a few miles North of Stalybridge.

In 1861, Samuel had moved further North to live at 128 Pousy (?) Street, Haslingden, Accrington.

In 1871, "Saml Edwd Stocks" was living with Sarah Ann Miller and her family in Witton, Cheshire.

About 1875, the family moved from Northwich to Tranmere (indicated by the childrens places of Birth).

In 1881, living at 14 Brougham St., Tranmere, Birkenhead.

In 1891, Samuel and Sarah A Stocks (40 & 41) are living at 194 Peel Street, Tranmere, Birkenhead with their 8 children.

Still there in 1901, but away from Sarah Ann, living with Sarah, Samuel and Susannah.  He was buried with his brother in 1916, so may have separated.

By 1911, all Samuels children had married (except John who had also left home), so Samuel was lodging with the Ridley family in Chester.  Timothy Ridley (Head, aged 53)was a houise Joiner and his son John Henry a draughtsman, so possibly Samuel was working as part of their family business.

In 1904 and 1908, "Samuel Edward Stocks" and Sarah Ann Stocks had their daughters Emily, Sarah Ann and Susannah baptised at St Paul's and St Catherins, Tranmere.

In 1911 (and I asume also in 1916) William Martin Harnman, wife Emily and children Emily (18), Lily (17), William Arthur (15) and George Henry (14) wre living at 33 Sidney St., Lower Tranmere.  Probably as the daughters married and left home, they had space for a lodger and Samuel moved in as his final address before he died (a boarder at Hoole with the Ridley family).
1823 - 1873 George Stocks 49 49 George was born 1824 and baptised 6 Jun 1824, the son of Job, a clothier (later a weaver), and Lucy.

In 1841, George (15) was living with his parents (Job, Lucy) and siblings Susannah (15), Ruth (13) and Martha (9)  at Park Gate, Berry Brow, Almondbury, Huddersfield

19 Feb 1849, George Stocks, 25, Delver, son of Job  married Rebecca Robinson, 24, spinster, dau of Robert Robinson of Milne Bridge, Linthwaite.

In 1851, George and Rebecca (27 & 24) are living at 32 Back Grosvenor St., Stalybridge, Lancashire (Castle Hall area) with 2 lodgers (George and Ann Gleddill) and 1m old son Samuel (born in Cheshire).

From 1851 to 1856, George and Rebecca had their 4 chirdren, with Albert registered at Hartshead and the others (Samuel, Sarah Jane and Walter) at Dukinfield.

In 1856, George and "Rebecca" were living at 57 Grass Croft Street, Dukinfield (where son Walter was born).

Betweein 1856 and 1861, George and Rebecca moved from Stalybridge to Haslingden. In 1861 they had left Stalybridge and Joseph and Mary Ann Midword, another stone mason, was living there (district 27a).

In 1861, George (37, Head) a Stone Mason from Berry Brow, is with wife "Ann" (35), living at 128 Dowry Street, Haslingden, Old Accrington with sons Samuel and Albert (10 & 9, both labourers born Stalybridge).

Between 1861 and 1871, Rebecca Ann died, or was it earlier and the Ann in 1861 is another worman?

In 1871, George (48, Widower, Mason), lodging with son Albert (18) and Smith family (Joseph a grocer, wife Martha and two infants) at Gilstead, Bingley, Yorkshire.

George died in 1873 of phthisis (i.e. pulmonary tuberculosis or a similar progressive wasting disease).  His son albert was present at the death.

NOTE: Dont confuse another George Stocks (29, porter) from Huddersfield married to Rebecca (24) from Manchester in Birkenhead in 1861. They are too young.

NOTE: There is another George stocks, Stonemason, (not the same parson as our George who was with "Ann" in 1861) of similar age married Letitia Craige (Irish) in 1858 on the Wriial.

According to the Banns, William's father was Joseph.
1850 - 1917 Emma Horsfall 66 66 Appears twice on 1851 census (on same page), but only one Emma Stocks birth registered before the census.

She's also a Stocks, and order on 1851 census return (under Ruth) implies she is possibly an illegitamate daughter of Ruth.

In 1873, Emma Horsfall was witness to her cousin Albert Stock's marriage to Jane Smith.

In 1881, Emma and Enock (27 & 30) were living with Emma's mother Susannah (Wid) at Deadmanstone Lane, Berry Brow

After moving to Halifax, Elsie, Enoch and Emma ere back living in Huddersfield in 1911.
1799 - 1799 Michael Stocks 4m 4m 1806 - 1806 Ruth Stocks 2m 2m Only marriage I can find is between Ruth Stocks and John Howarth, 14-Mar-1833 at Mirfield.  This is about 8 miles from Berry Brow on the other side of Huddersfield, so is not a good match.  It is more likely Ruth died as a child. There are baptism and burial records for this Ruth, father named as George.

Also, another Ruth, daughter of George Stocks, was buried at Almondbury, 3-Aug-1803, aged 2.
1738 - 1819 Elizabeth Perkin 81 81 Elizabeth was from DeadManStone (in 1757), Almondbury according to Marriage.  She continued to live here through both marriages until at least 1779. 1763 - 1763 <child> Stocks ? 1769 Sarah (Sally) Stocks Another Sally Stocks was christened on 7-Mar-1769, father Joshia, but this Sally died after 23 days.  At these times, Sally was an uncommon name (although used as a nickname for Sarah), so probably Joseph and Joshua were brothers, naming their children the same!

There is no marriage record for Sally from Almondbury.
1778 - 1778 <child> Stocks ? 1779 - 1779 <child> Stocks ? 1786 - 1855 Betty Stocks 69 69 In 1841, Betty Gledhill (55) is at Berry Brow with Ruth (25), Mathew (20), Hamer (14).  Also are Elizabeth and Alfred (4 & 3), children of Ruth. 1788 - 1791 Esther Stocks 3 3 1790 - 1825 Susannah Stocks 35 35 Susannah's children were born at Newsome, between Lockwood and Berry Brow.  Susannah was only 27 when her first husband died at Newsome in 1817.  She probably remarried John Hirst in 1818. Her children would have been brought up by John.

In 1825, Susannah Hirst of Taylor Hill died, aged 36.

Son George left home to become a School Master at Newsome.  He later lived with his cousin.

Daughter Rebecca married in 1835.
1793 Esther Stocks Esther may have married Thomas Buthroyd and had a daughter Mary, baptised 26 May 1817. 1773 Susannah Stocks Susannah may have married William Tate in 1811, but she would have been quite old at 33. 1831 - 1860 Jonadab Brook 29 29 Jonadab's parents were "Jonn Brook" and Betty.

in 1853 Jonadab was a weaver from Berry Brow (when married and when Mary was baptised).

In 1855 they had a son John thad died an infant.  The non-conformist baptish shows Johadan as a Loom Repairer from Berry Brow and confirms Ruth daughter (maybe adopted) of Job Stocks.
1857 - 1929 George Brook 72 72 WARNING: In 1857, there are 4 George Brook birth registrations in Huddersfield, as well as several others with second given names.

In 1861, George (4), Job and Lucy's grandson was living with them in Almondbury.

In 1871, George (14) was a pupil at Wilmslow, Altrincham.

In 1881, George Brook (aged 24) was living with his cousin Emma and Enoch Geldgill and mother Susannah Horsfall at Deadmanstone Lane.

George moved to London.  He must have been a bit of a romantic, as in 1888 he took his wife Lydia Wood to Paris, France to marry her.

In 1891, George was, 34 (born Huddersfield) was married and a university lecturer at St Martin in the Fields, London. Another (or the same) George and Lydia (34 & 36) were with his brother John Brook and wife Martha (36 & 34) at Almondbury.  The brothers were from Almondbury and Lydia from Westminster.

In 1901, George and Lydia (44 & 53) were at Bradford with daughter Mabel Brook (8). George was a traveller (salesman) for Textile Machinery. He was born Berry Brow and Lydia was born in Pimlico.

In 1911, George and Lydia (54 & 63) were at 4 Ashville Terrace, New Street, Farsley with their daughter Mabel Dorothy Brook (18).  She was their only child.
~1801 - 1845 Jonathan Brook 44 44 In the 1820/30s, Jonathan and Mary probably lived at Whitestones, Stocksmoor in the township of Thurstonland and Parish of Kirkburton. Today there is a small group of houses "Whitestones", on Stocks Moor Road, which is probably where son Johadab (and others) were born.

Jonathan probably had a sister Maria Brook (b.1804).  In 1851, Maria lived at Dog Hall, Lockwood had a son John Pearson, and Isaac (22), Jondab (19), William (16), and Thomas (15) as step-children.
D. 1839 Betty Moorhouse 1835 Thomas Brook 1785 - 1841 Matthew Gledhill 56 56 Matthew's father was originaly thought to be Benjamin Gledhill, who was christened on 5-Jan-1760 in Almondbury.  His father was also Benjamin (c.12-Nov-1730) and his father John Gledhill.

Another more likely possibility is Matthew is the son of Matthew and Susan, baptised March 1785.  This Clothier family were from Berry Brow and used Highfield Independant.  The age at death is also more consistant.

1807 <male> Gledhill 1796 - 1875 Benjamin Stocks 78 78 There's only one Benjamin Stocks in Almondbury, and another in Huddersfield who was married to Hannah Barber.  Benjamin seems to have stopped having his children baptised after George in 1825 (except for Ann in 1837, 7 years after she was born).  The birth of Joseph (his last child) in 1838 confirms the mother as CAMPINOT.

Benjamin was a Cloth Dresser from Berry Brow until at least 1841 (when he was 40), and later perhaps a mechanic and worked in the factories of Yorkshire, never travelling to the US (c.f. Job W. Stocks biograpohy).

Both parents died, yet Joseph is with Jonathan and Nancy Brook in 1851. If this is the same Joseph, which seems likely, he must be a step-son or his father ran a double life!

There are other Jonathan and Bett baptisma, and some may overlat this family.  It could be that there are two families, but only one non-conformist.

In 1851, Sarah Boothroyd is described as dau-in-law and unmarried, aged 30 with the Jushua Armitage family.  A Hand Loom Weaver.  She has a daughter Eliza aged 5.  They are at house 466, Almondbury.  Eliza's baptism of 21 Sep 1845 shows Sarah was a spinster from Almondbury.

However, also in 1851 there is Sarah Smith wife of Joseph of Honley, a butcher.  This Sarah is born at Newsome and has her sister Susannah Boothroyd with her from Netherton.  This is a perfect match!
1824 - 1891 Joseph Boothroyd 67 67 1831 Susannah Boothroyd Note: There is another Susannah Boothroyd from Meltham, Huddersfield the same age.

In 1851, Susannah (20, born Netherton) was living in Honley with her sister Sarah and Joseph Smith.

Born 1814; his parents may be Joseph and Rachael and has a siblings William (b.1810), Elizaveth (b.1812), Joseph (b.1816) and Benjamin (b.1818), all baptised at the  Huddersfield, Queens Street Wesleyan Chapel.

Probably married before 1937

In 1861, George a stone mason, and Ann "Gleddill" (46 & 48) were at Dukinfield with a son John (aged 2).

This is not the George son of William, a weaver, who married Ann Shaw at Huddersfield in 1857 (wrong ages).  It may be someone unralated, or possibly a cousin, son of Matthew.
1812 Ann Gledhill Based on birth records of son John (aged 2 in 1861), MMN = LEECH, but no such marriage. 1856 - 1857 Walter Stocks 1 1 Walter was born 2 Feb 1856, at 57 Grass Croft Street, Dukinfield, son of George STOCKS a Stone Mason and Rebecca Stocks, formerly ROBINSON.

The Samuel born 22 May 1823 son Samuel & sarah Brook is another family.

In 1841, Samuel a Cloth Dresser, is probably the grandson of Lydia Brook (widow, aged 70), living at Berry Brow with his assumed brother Henry (aged 20).

In 1845,. Samuel, Cloth Dresser, did not record his father's name on his marriage record to Betty Jepson, so was probably illegitimate.

Samuel and Betty were married 13 May 1845 at Almondbury, just after the birth of their son Edward.  Samuel did not record the name of his father.

In 1851, Samuel, a woollen cloth dresser, and Betty (27 & 29) were at 1499 Berry Brow, Almondbury with their son Edward (6).

After his father Francis died in 1890 (before he was born), is seem likely he was cared for by his uncle John Wm Brook, but where was he in 1891 as born before the census?

In 1901, Henry Brook (aged 10, nephew) was with his uncle John William Brook at Newsome, Almondbury.

After 1901, Henry vapourised again !
