John's father was William Hopkins and his mother was Ellen Cousins. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Herbert, George, Jemima, Emily, Georgiana, Gertrude and Minnie.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 24 in June 1895 in West Derby.²
