John from Blackrod. Ellen baptised Walmsey; D.L
from 1797-1799, back to G.B 1800-1802,
Breightmet 1802-1803, then G.B again.
Mary, Janes and Sarah (1802-1805) could be a
different John & Ann family from Breightmet
(between Bolton & Bury) and 2 Marys and births
only 1 month appart.
John and James are both from Water Street
Between 1784 and 1792, there is a big gap in
the baptisms for John and Ann. At the same
time there are births registered for daughters of
John and Nancy of G.B. (but no marriage for a
John and Nancy). It is therefore likely Nancy
was a pet name for Ann.

John probably had a brother Thomas, as they had their children (Alice) baptised on the same day. Early, when the children were being baptised, John was a weaver, but later became a shopkeeper.
In 1841, John is 55 on the census, living at Water Street, Little Bolton. A year earlier, James Mather of Water St, his brother married Martha Bently. His father John was shown as a shopkeeper.
In 1841, after James had married, John (55) was with presumably his son John, aged 20.
John is recorded as a shopkeeper on son Joseph's second marriage of 1845 (and on a probate record).

John was a weaver when he married Ann in 1781.
Between 1784 and 1792, there is a big gap in the birth (baptisms) for John and Ann. At the same time there are births registered for two daughters of John and Nancy of G.B. (but no marriage for a John and Nancy). It is therefore likely Nancy was a pet name for Ann which was common practice in the 19th cent.
Probate records show John was a shopkeeper when he died in 1822.

Q3 1844, John's birth was recorded as John Mather Isherwood as his parents hadnt yet married. and Hannah was a widow.
John was a Counterpane Weaver in 1861, while his father was a Counterpane Manufacturer.

Mary died in Jan 1872, and was buried at Halliwell (parents also buried with her).
In 1881 and 1891, their daughter Annie was living with her grandmother Catherine Wroe. Had John also died? The only Bolton death record of correct age is for 1901.
In 1876, John marrried Alice Jane Wroe from Stockport. It was a civil marriage at Stockport.
In 1881, John (36) was with his new wife Alice Jane (28) from Stockport. He was a still a Quilt Manufacturer at 161 Chorley Old Road, Halliwell. Neighbours were James and Nancy Bowen, and they has a son James Mather Bowen, aged 5, who appears be John's illigitimate and adopted son (there is a birth for a James Mather Bowen, with MMN Mather born 27 Aug 1875. He was disabled and never worked). However, this is John's sister's family who married James Bowen in 1867.
In 1891, John and Alice J (46 & 39) were still at 161 Chorley Old Road with his sister's family neighbours at 159.

James became a Muslin Manufacturer in Little Bolton, and was that in 1840 when he married Martha Bentley. His father was John Mather, a shopkeeper. His brother(?), Charles Mather was witness at their marriage.
In 1839, a license was prepared for the marriage of "James Mather" a manucacturer to "Martha Bentley", and was placed in the newspapers on 29 Aug 1840 and 5 Sep 1840
In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40) in Dean's Gate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.F.), John Yeoman (20, a Hatter) and William Coonnaly (30, Irish). He had presumably taken over the Inn from Matty's father William Horrocks in 1840 when he married Matty. Two years later, both Matty and her father died.

Martha was the daughter of William Horrocks, a publican.
Because Matty is buried at Bradshaw it was assumed she is a sister of Nathaniel, who's wife and son John are also buried there. However, this seems not to be the case. The burial shows she is of Great Bolton, not Harwood.
Martha Bentley (nee Horrocks) of Deansgate was a widow when she married James Mather by licence in 1840. Martha's father was William Horrocks, a publican. She is also shown as a widow of Great Bolton in the CHESHIRE marriage bonds (and James a manufacturer from Little Bolton). William Horrocks, Innkeeper, was from Bent Gate in Hasligden and also died in 1842, leavivg an estate of about £100 for his widow Sarah to administor.
In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40) in Deansgate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.S.), John Yeoman (20), a Hatter and William Coonnaly (30, Irish)
