James was born in 1794 in Little Neston and his baptism took place on May 25th, 1794 in Neston.¹²

James' father was Joseph Woodworth and his mother was Alice Dobb. He had five brothers and a sister, named John, John, Joseph, William, Thomas and Mary. He was the youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 76 on January 8th, 1870 in Neston. His burial was in Neston.³⁴

  In 1851 James a School Master and Jane (57 & 69) were at Meadow Cottage with Mary Nevett (50), a visitor. James a master mariner and Isabella Seddon (45 & 46) and family were also living at Meadow Cottage.
  
  In 1864, James Woodward (aged about 70) who was an actuary for the Neston Savings Bank was charged with forgery, embezzling £3000 from the Bank. The courthouse was packed with customers of the bank concerned about their savings. James was a short man, well dressed with a grey beard. £200 had been credited to his nephew Joseph Woodward, a Gardener of Neston. His wife (Jane) aged 84 was still living and his only son (Henry) was a clergyman.
  James was convicted and sentances to 5 years penal servitude at Chester assizes..
