William's father was Samuel Woodward and his mother was Martha Taylor. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Woodworth (Woodward) and Hannah Kemp. He had two brothers named Joseph and Thomas. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 38 on June 10th, 1887 in Neston.¹
