Emma was born in 1887 in Illinois (IL). Emma's father was Christoph Heinrich Witthoft Jnr and her mother was Johanna (Anna) C Dittmer.  Her maternal grandparents were Henry Dittmer and Marie Stienhaur. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Katie, Anna and Dora.  She was the fifth oldest of the six known children.
