William was born in July 1856 in Atherton.1  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Johnson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Ann, Betty and Betty. He had an adopted brother named Henry.  He died at the age of 77 in March 1934 in Atherton.2

‌William and Ann were married in a civil ceremony in June 1888 in Atherton.3  They had three sons and a daughter, named John, Thomas, Frank and Annie.  There are no more children.
