Sarah was born in 1867 in Castleford.1  Sarah's father was John Whitehead and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Boothroyd. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Jonas, Tom, Rachel, Eliza, Martha and Ann.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven known children.
