Martha was born in June 1865 in Castleford.1  Martha's father was John Whitehead and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Boothroyd. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Jonas, Tom, Rachel, Eliza, Sarah and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
