Ann was born in December 1869 in Castleford.1  Ann's father was John Whitehead and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Boothroyd. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Jonas, Tom, Rachel, Eliza, Martha and Sarah.  She was the sixth oldest of the seven known children.
