Joseph's christening took place on April 19th, 1813 in Ossett.1  Joseph's father was Mark Whitaker and his mother was Mary Megson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Mark, Abraham, Isaac, Rachel, Zilphe, Emma, Susanna and Mary.  Emma, Abraham, Isaac and Joseph were quadruplets.
