George was born in 1874 in Turton.1  George's father was George Warburton and his mother was Ann Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Robert, Betsy and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
