Ellen was born in 1836 in Breightmet and her baptism took place on July 24th, 1836 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Ellen's father was Henry Twist and her mother was Mary Kirkman.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Twist and Alice Lomax. She had a brother and four sisters, named John, Sarah, Eve, Catherine and Mary.  She was the oldest of the six known children.
