John was born in 1839 in Breightmet.1  John's father was Henry Twist and his mother was Mary Kirkman.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Twist and Alice Lomax. He had five sisters named Ellen, Sarah, Eve, Catherine and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the six known children.
