William's father was John Ambrose Thomas and his mother was Margaret Eleanor Jones. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Leslie, (Ann) and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Albert and Lillian.  He died at the age of 81 in March 1983 in Wallasey.²
