Samuel's father was William Taylor and his mother was Catherine O'Boyle. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Emily and Mary.  He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named George, Ellen, Louisa and Sarah.
