Ellen's father was William Taylor and her mother was Winifred Ashworth. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Louisa and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Samuel, William, Thomas, Emily and Mary.

‌Ellen and James were married in a civil ceremony in 1891 in Bolton.²
