Lydia was born in 1880. Lydia's father was John Samuel Taylor and her mother was Eliza Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Harriet Horrocks. She had two brothers and a sister, named John, Albert and Mary. She was the oldest of the four children.
