John's father was John Taylor and his mother was Peggy (Margaret) Scowcroft Mather. His maternal grandparents were Solomon Mather and Jane Scowcroft. He had a brother and four sisters, named Arthur, Jane, Elizabeth, Amelia and Clara. He was the youngest of the six children.
