Thomas' father was Joseph Sykes and his mother was Mary Lightowler.  His paternal grandparents were Edmund Sykes and Elizabeth Wood. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Joseph, John, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebecah, Mary and Hannah.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
