Mary was born about 1753 in Huddersfield and her christening took place there on December 2nd, 1753.¹

Mary's father was Joseph Sykes and her mother was Mary Lightowler. Her paternal grandparents were Edmund Sykes and Elizabeth Wood. She had five brothers and four sisters, named William, Joseph, John, James, Thomas, Elizabeth, Rebecah, Mary and Hannah. She was the sixth oldest of the ten children. She died as an infant about 1754 in Huddersfield.
