Samuel was born on March 28th, 1851 in Almondbury and his baptism took place on May 9th, 1851 in Lockwood.1 2  Samuel's father was Job Stocks and his mother was Mary Swindon.  His paternal grandparents were James Stocks and Hannah Edwards. He had four brothers named Henry, Fred, Edwin and James.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
