Joseph's father was Thomas Stocks and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Cattons.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stocks and Eliza Wilkinson. He had two brothers named Matty and David.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named David and Hannah.
