Joseph was born in 1760 in Fartown and his baptism took place on January 27th, 1760 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1  Joseph's father was Thomas Stocks and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Cattons.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stocks and Eliza Wilkinson. He had two brothers named Matty and David.  He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named David and Hannah.
