Martha was born in 1738 in Kirkheaton and her baptism took place there on September 26th, 1736.1 2  Martha's father was Joshua Stocks and her mother was Mary Brook.  Her paternal grandparents were Joshua Stocks and Elizabeth Bingley. She had a brother and two sisters, named Joshua, Bettie and Sarah.  She was the second youngest of the four known children.
