George was born in 1839 in Almondbury.1  George's father was Charles Stocks and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Boothroyd.  His paternal grandparents were George Stocks and Martha Stocks. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Henry, William, Martha and Ellen.  He was the oldest of the six children.
