Ellen was born in 1844 in Almondbury.1   Ellen's father was Charles Stocks and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Boothroyd.  Her paternal grandparents were George Stocks and Martha Stocks. She had four brothers and a sister, named George, Thomas, Henry, William and Martha.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
