Arthur's father was William Shipley and his mother was Sarah Hunt. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Joseph, Edward, Annie, Alice, (Ellen) and Emily. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 13 in 1893.¹
