Maria's father was William Settle and her mother was Sarah Ann Cheetham. Her paternal grandparents were Abraham Settle and Alice Mather. She had a brother named Henry. She was the older of the two children. She had a half-sister named Elizabeth. She died at the age of 3 in December 1858 in Salford.¹
