Jeffrey was born on December 22nd, 1896 and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1897 in Malpas.1 2  Jeffrey's father was Smith Augustus Salt and his mother was Annie Richards.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Richards and Mary Jane Tomkin. He had a brother and five sisters, named George, Ruth, Myra, Nancy, Alice and Marion.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 75 in July 1972 in Cheshire.3
