Hannah was born in 1827 in Sharples and her baptism took place on February 26th, 1828 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Hannah's father was James Rothwell and her mother was Mary Nightingale. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Esther and Betsy.  She was the oldest of the five children.
