Betsy's father was James Rothwell and her mother was Mary Nightingale. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Hannah and Esther. She was the second youngest of the five children. She died due to diabetes at the age of 60 in July 1897 in Lawrence. She was buried in July 1897.3

In 1841, Betsy (5) was with parents James and Mary (35 & 30) at Blair Row, High Houses, Sharples. Her father was a Waggoner.
In 1851, Betty was aged 15 and living on the Blackburn Road, Sharples with her parents and family.
