John's father was Thomas Pickles and his mother was Mary Walsh.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Walsh and Mary Bear. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Thomas, William, Michael, Sarah, Isabel, Matty and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 18 in March 1801 in Height.  He was buried on March 29th, 1801 at All Saints (Bingley).²
