Benjamin's father was Michael Pickles and his mother was Margaret. He had four brothers and three sisters, named David, Thomas, Henry, Joseph, Isabel, Hannah and Nancy.  He was the youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 34 in 1814 in Foulridge.  He was buried on February 8th, 1814 at St. Bartholomew's (Colne).²
