Rachel's father was Miles Nightingale and her mother was Lucy Thornley.  Her paternal grandparents were Miles Nightingale and Hannah Smith. She had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Miles, James, Eleanor, Ann and Mary.  She was the youngest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named Robert.
