Miles' father was Miles Nightingale and his mother was Lucy Thornley.  His paternal grandparents were Miles Nightingale and Hannah Smith. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Eleanor, Ann, Mary and Rachel.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named Robert.
