Sarah was born in 1874 in Sharples.¹ Sarah's father was Samuel Naylor and her mother was Hannah Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Ralph Entwistle and Alice Mather. Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham were her grandparents through her mother's adoption. She had two brothers named Samuel and John. She was the oldest of the three known children.
