Richard's father was Richard Mullock and his mother was Elizabeth Cartwright. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mullock and Jane Richards. He had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Ambrose, Mary, Jane, Anne, Ann and Elizabeth. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
