William was born in September 1855 in Atherton.1  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Johnson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Jameson. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Ann, Betty and Betty. He had an adopted brother named Henry.
