William was born in 1859 in Manchester.1  William's father was Luke Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Leigh.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three known children.
