John was born in 1854 in Manchester.1  John's father was Luke Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Leigh.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Sarah (Sally) Stewart. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the three known children.
