William was born in February 1802 in WestLeigh and his baptism took place on February 14th, 1802 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  William's father was James Mather and his mother was Ann Battersby. He had three sisters named Alice, Ellen and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four known children.
